Instructor: Professor J.D. Brown

Professor Brown has been on the faculty of Fire Protection & Safety Technology program since 1992. He has a wide experience in the field as a practicing safety professional for more than 25 years. He retired from the faculty in 2013 but continues to contribute and teach occasionally..

Prior to turning to the university classroom in 1989, he was a Safety Engineer for Rockwell International, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and was the Safety Administrator for the Sacramento, CA Municipal Utility District. Professor Brown has a BS in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Utah State University and a MS in Safety from the University of Southern California. He has significant further graduate study in Industrial Hygiene and Environmental Science at the University of Oklahoma.

Professor Brown is an active member of professional societies. He has held offices and committee assignments with the ASSE and AIHA. He is a registered Professional Engineer (California) and a Certified Safety Professional. In addition to his university responsibilities, he is active in safety consulting work. He has done work for several international corporations, local governments, small business and the United States Department of Energy. He has presented papers and taught seminars in Venezuela, South Korea, China and Mongolia.
