Steps to Design, Commission and Maintain Fire Protection Systems Workshop

Perform a building code analysis, using the 2012 edition of the International Building Code and the International Fire Code, that includes types of construction, height and area limitations, building separation or exposure protection, and fire protection systems.

Identify Occupancy Classification.

Determine the requirements of fire alarm systems in new and existing construction.

Determine the requirements of fire suppression systems in new and existing construction.

Identify required fire rated construction and how fire ratings may be modified when providing fire protection systems.

Identify important elements in the design of fire protection systems and the critical coordination items with other engineering and construction disciplines.

Perform acceptance testing and commissioning for new fire alarm and fire sprinkler systems in new and existing construction.

Conduct annual test, inspection and maintenance requirements after acceptance of the fire protection system (These items are required after the installation contractor completes the installation and leaves the project).

Identify codes and standards to reference when working with fire protection systems (fire alarms, fire sprinkler, standpipes, etc...).

Workshop Instructor: Andy McPherson, PE

Andy McPherson is a faculty member of the OSU Fire Protection Program and is a licensed fire protection engineer for an Oklahoma based architectural and engineering firm. He holds a fire protection engineering license in six different states and his projects have been in locations such as Taiwan, Azores, Spain, Lithuania, Africa, Guam, Italy and the US. His professional experiences include working as the lead fire protection engineer for projects such as a bio-mass power generation plant, bio-diesel refinery, health care facilities, college and university facilities, high-rises, multi-building campuses, and other industrial and business related facilities.

OSU certificate of program completion indicating 4.0 continuing education units will be awarded.
